The Renaissance Society

Mirror, 2001, by Robert Barry

Robert Barry (b. 1936, New York) is a foundational figure in the Conceptual art movement of the United States. His practice transcends physical limitations of space and materials, employing performance, installation, radio waves, and even attempted telepathy to encourage free association of meaning to his work. His various techniques pose questions on dematerialization and absence, aiming to renegotiate the viewer’s relationship to the artistic experience.

Barry’s work has been included in era-defining exhibitions such as “When Attitudes Become Form…” at the Kunsthalle Bern and The Institute of Contemporary Art, London in 1969, Harald Szeemann’s Documenta V in 1972, and “Reconsidering the Object of Art” at LA MoCA in 1995. He was the subject of a solo exhibition at The Renaissance Society in 1985.
