The Renaissance Society
Chopping Block, 2001, by Juan Muñoz
Juan Muñoz (1953–2001) was a legendary sculptor from Spain, known for his ambitious scale and materiality. He is best known for his enigmatic sculptures of strangely haunting human figures, which he began in the late 80s. Cast in bronze or resin, the sculptures are modeled with a naturalism that can appear convincingly real, although they are often shown in impossible positions, such as seated in chairs mounted on a wall or suspended upside down from existing architectural elements. His work acknowledges the emotional range of the human condition, from the absurd and irrational to the poignant and humorous.
Muñoz’s first exhibition in the United States was at The Renaissance Society in 1990. He went on to have an illustrious career in the U.S. and abroad, exhibiting at the Hirshhorn Museum, MoMA, Tate Modern, Documenta 9, and Museo Reina Sofía, among many others before his untimely death at the age of forty-eight.
